My writing has been influenced by so many facets of entertainment. Books, of course, but also movies, television, music and definitely comics. I’m a fan of SO many things, but not all of them necessarily relate to my writing. Here are a few of the biggies that I can pinpoint in my work:

When I first set out to write SKYSHIP, I wanted to craft a book that combined my favorite elements of action/adventure novels and coming-of-age stories. My biggest influences in this category tend to fall into one of those two genres.

Action/Adventure: Maximum Ride series, Artemis Fowl series, Alex Rider series

Coming-Of-Age: Feed, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Terminator 2: Judgement Day – a tightness of plot and tension that I totally aspire to.
Star Wars – since I was a kid
Jurassic Park (the grandeur of it), Stand By Me (the quiet moments), Donnie Darko (the weirdness), Super 8 (new, yes, but totally me), Akira (again, the grandeur and weirdness)

I have to start out by mentioning the holy trinity of Whedon-ness. Buffy, Angel and Firefly. These were SO formative during my teen years. I think the dialogue has just seeped into my consciousness.

Also: 90′s animated comic book adaptations, Trigun, Freaks & Geeks, Misfits, Roswell, Malcolm in the Middle, Jack & Bobby, 1960′s Batman (my earliest influence, for better or worse!)

I grew up on comics, especially of the Marvel variety. I was a huge Spider-Man and X-Men fan as a kid. When I was a bit older, Brian K Vaughn’s Runaways series had an ENORMOUS influence on me, as did his Y: The Last Man series.

I’m a HUGE music fan. In fact, I write a blog about it! Some of my favorite sci-fi/futuristic bands that fit the sound of my writing are: Superfamily, Sound Of Arrows, Pnau, Muse, BWO, The Galvatrons, Surferosa
